I was at the Boulder Reservoir today, because it's high 70s here and my whole being is aching for the outside. There are two sides to "the rez", one in which you are allowed to swim and boat, the other in which you are not. On the "no swimming side" there are signs, and as soon as it gets hot, someone is always swimming right by that sign.
This is a blip of 10 seconds in my mind as I saw the rogue swimmer... ... "it's a kid, who cares".... "yeah, stick it to the man"... "how dare they break the rules".... "ew," (like Alexis Rose)... "this is the problem"... "or is it the solution". Immediately following the parade of my different human reactions, was the most sneaky and hilarious.
The spiritual ego. The one who makes EVERYTHING mean something... about ME. "this must mean I am not following the signs I'm getting"...
Are you familiar with this part of self?
As I said, it is sneaky. It is the part of us that makes ourselves the center of the universe. And then uses language like "the universe says". The part of us that wants everyone to know we do yoga, or we meditate, or we have high vibrational supplements, or a magical fix for your issues. The part of us that listens to chanting and wears crystal amulets. To let everyone know we have escaped, I mean transcended, our humanity.
Here's the thing, this spiritual ego, the part of you that wants to let the world know you are good, that wants to know that the universe has your back, that wants to feel significant, is not wrong. That's a very basic human thing... I know, isn't is awkward when you realize your obsession with chanting is maybe actually extremely human?
Here's how you know it's spiritual ego...
1. You are offended by this email
2. You are secretly hoping your morning ritual, your purpose activation, or a divine union, will make the pain stop
3. You are constantly focused outside yourself to find "signs"
4. People know you as "the weirdo" when you go to family functions
5. You google every animal you see to find out what it means
6. You walk around thinking you know what's going on
It's so cute. It's so funny. It's so normal. Don't beat yourself up if you catch yourself here. We all have egos. They are not meant to die, but rather be integrated. Just like your hands could be seen as tools you learn to use over time, so is the ego a tool you learn to use over time.
When I work with my clients and in my courses I help people create characters out of these parts of self. So that we get to see how they have been helpful, what they are asking for, and how you can utilize that energy differently.
If you catch yourself in your spiritual ego, go eat a hot dog (except ew) and remind yourself you aren't special (except you are). And you aren't important (except you are). And your life is meaningless (except it isn't).
If you read this, I just want you to know that I am very spiritual and deeply wise and therefore now you are too. We probably are saving the whales with this energetic exchange. (laugh emoji)
I actually really do appreciate you,
Like really. Keep on laughing when you can.
Love,
Amy
